Tips for Better Retail
By Shauna Stinson, President, Vizwerks, Inc.

Owning or running a retail store can be fun and exciting. It should also be financially rewarding. Here are four tips for getting the most from your retail space.

Who is the Customer?
The most important key is to communicate a clear brand message that speaks directly to your customer. Within the store, everything supports that message, including the layout, fixturing, signage and merchandising. For example, is the brand warm and friendly or clean and modern?

Invite Them In
Use your storefront, windows and entry area to draw customers into your store. Windows are an excellent opportunity to showcase your latest and greatest products. Once inside, create an entry area where product merchandising is interesting and not too dense, and the customer can feel comfortable browsing. Draw them deeper into the space by placing heavier merchandised fixtures, basic products and sale items towards the back of the store.

Make the Message Clear
Too much signage can clutter the store and the message. Your brand signage should be impactful and appear in 2-3 strategic locations such as the storefront and the cashwrap. Wayfinding signage at or above eye level helps your customers find the products they’re looking for, such as women or music or paint. Two other levels of signage – lifestyle and technical benefits – can support your brand and help customers choose the product the best fits their needs. Lifestyle imagery can occur throughout the space to show the brand message in action. Technical benefits, including price, should occur on or near the products.

Know your Target
One of the most important basics is to know how much business your store is capable of producing. Once you know that target, you can put things in place to help achieve the target and measure for reaching, and surpassing, your business goals.

Everything within a retail store supports the brand message, including the layout, aesthetics, fixturing, signage and merchandising.
